Job Description: 

Position:    Program Instructor in the Composite Boat Building Program at the Landing School.  This position is a full-time, permanent position, functioning within the direct supervision of the Director of Education, hired by the President of the School.

Objective:    The Composite Boat Building curriculum is designed to provide students with a structured learning environment in which they can become knowledgeable and proficient in the practical application of the fundamental principles of construction and manufacturing techniques in the composites industry, primarily focused on the Marine Trades Industry

The program instructs students in the fabrication of composite components and the construction of commercial products, including small, modern boats, using various non-wood materials such as fiberglass, carbon fiber, Kevlar, and natural fibers such as flax.

Teaching students how to work on and complete projects on schedule with a high level of quality are primary goals. Projects for the school may vary from year to year but will always include a boat build and associated tooling.

Duties and Responsibilities: In fulfillment of the objectives, the CBB Instructor, together with other members of the CBB faculty, will:

  • Continue to develop and improve the curriculum through syllabus, lesson plans, teaching equipment/materials, and scheduling of student work.
  • Work directly with students, with primary responsibility for lectures, demonstrations, bench work, practice applications, and the boat being built that year.
  • Assist students in learning, individually, in small groups, and as a class, through clear communication; patient, understanding, approach; thorough and professional knowledge; mature leadership; and positive, honest academic advice.
  • Manage Composite Boat Building student project(s) and project boats:
    • Develop project schedules with milestones and completion dates.
    • Develop a Bill of Materials for the project.
    • Work with Landing School purchasing agent and/ or vendors to source and order materials.
    • Incorporate project management practices into the CBB curriculum.
  • Evaluate student learning through questioning, homework, practical and theoretical testing.
  • Share in the administrative tasks of the development and successful operation of the program, as assigned by the Director of Education.
  • Share responsibility for the management of program facilities and equipment, as assigned by the Director of Education and President.
  • Demonstrate, teach, and enforce, shop safety requirements and procedures.
  • Uphold all school policies set forth in the Student Handbook and the School Policy Manual.
  • Participate in school functions, staff meetings, and professional development activities, including staffing at boat shows.
  • Continue to develop skills and knowledge pertinent to teaching and current marine industry practices.
  • Work cooperatively and professionally with the Director of Education, staff, and students of the School at all times.
Qualifications:

  • Associates degree or better
  • Minimum of four years working in industry, building and repairing products using modern composite materials such as: fiberglass, Kevlar, carbon fiber, and polyester, vinylester and epoxy resin systems.
  • Proven in-depth practical experience with various open and closed-molding techniques including wet layup, infusion, and pre-preg.
  • In-depth experience in specifically yacht construction and repair a strong plus.
  • Experience in CNC programming and cutting a strong plus.
  • Practical experience in design and specification development a plus
  • Previous teaching experience preferred. Alternatively, suitable training may be required before the faculty member assumes primary instructional responsibilities.
