The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Athletic Department has announced the hiring of Chris Caswell as Head Softball Coach effective immediately.

Previous to his appointment at SMCC, Caswell served as Head Softball Coach at Dover High School (N.H.) for two seasons (2020, 2021), and as Head Coach of the Lady Cannons U-16 and U-18 teams for three seasons.

Caswell currently leads the Granite State Elite U-18 team and the Granite State National Team. The Maine native graduated from Massabesic High School where he played varsity baseball.

Caswell expressed, “I truly am excited to join the SMCC Athletic staff. In going through the hiring process, it was clear that my values aligned with those of the department, and at this point in my coaching career SMCC is set up to be a long-term fit for me. When you step on campus you can feel the pride and tradition that runs through all of the athletic programs. My family and I are incredibly excited to now be a part of that!”

“My coaching philosophy is two-fold—work rate on the diamond and the priority to academics before athletics.”

Associate Dean of Athletics and Alumni Affairs Matt Richards stated, “I was very impressed during the interview process with Chris— his desire not to just coach but to build a program is why he’s right for the position. His vision of student engagement, recruiting, and competing daily really struck a chord with me. I’m looking forward to working alongside him.”

In addition to his duties at SMCC, Caswell works as the Director of Facilities for the YMCA Sanford branch.

SMCC plans for a full return of the softball program in the 2022-23 fall and spring seasons.
