University of New England Gulls get past UNE, 80-61

Endicott College overcame a slow start to gain an 11-point halftime edge and finished off an 80-61 decision against the University of New England men's basketball team in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match Tuesday night (Dec. 6) at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.

The Gulls (5-2, 3-0 CCC) made just 2-of-9 shots over the opening eight minutes and found themselves behind by nine (15-6), but responded with a 22-5 run to take the lead (28-20) prior to the 6:00 mark of the initial frame. UNE countered with seven of the next nine, only to see 11 unanswered in a little over two minutes push the spread into double digits (41-27).

Endicott converted 14 of its final 22 attempts of the 1st half to climb above 50 percent, while the difference on the scoreboard was produced behind the arc (+3; 15-12) and at the line (+6; 6-0).

The visitors proceeded to record 12 of the first 14 in the 2nd to grab a 55-34 advantage with 13:33 to go. For the game, EC out-scored the hosts by nine from deep and by 10 on free throws.

Jalen Echevarria totaled 18 to pace the Gulls, and Jeff Hill tossed in another 16 points. Drew Brown and Mark Barrett contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively, while Cam Homsey scored eight and corralled a game-best 11 rebounds to essentially provide the margin on the boards (46-34).

The Nor'easters (2-8, 0-3 CCC) received 12 points and six caroms out of Winston Bryan. Ray Evans and Ant Moynihan both supplied nine points, Sam McElliott added eight, and Ryan Lin went for six points with a team-high eight rebounds.

UNE will take to the court again on Friday in an exhibition date with Division I Merrimack College, and then resume its CCC slate on January 3 back in Biddeford.
