University of New England Colonels clip UNE, 72-58

Nick Johnson and Angelo Sardenga combined for an 11-3 spurt just past the midway mark of the 2nd half as Curry College distanced itself from a four-point contest to chalk up a 72-58 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball result against the University of New England at Katz Gymnasium on Thursday night (Jan. 5).

The Colonels (3-9, 1-4 CCC) led for most of the match once they got out to a 23-12 cushion. While the Nor'easters (2-10, 0-5 CCC) scored nine in-a-row to tie things at 30-all in the waning moments of the 1st period, Curry scored the last four of the session to gain the edge for good (34-30).

The hosts increased it to 10 early in the 2nd, only to see UNE drop the gap back to four (48-44), but the run by Johnson (6) and Sardenga (5) established a 59-47 lead with 5:21 remaining in the game.

Johnson closed with 18 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and three steals for the Colonels, and Sardenga supplied 13 points. Jason Romans and Lowelle Torres went for 11 and 10 points, respectively. Curry finished with 22 points off 20 UNE turnovers, and had a nine-point scoring edge at the free throw line (17-8).

The Nor'easters were paced, off the bench, by 12 from Jayden Thornton and 10 out of Kyle Lombardi. Adrian Torres wrapped up with nine points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Sam McElliott corralled nine boards to aid UNE's 52-37 margin on the glass. The visitors had 20 offensive caroms on the night, but only shot 31.4 percent (22-for-70) from the field.
