Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women’s basketball was bested by the NJCAA No. 4 nationally ranked Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) this weekend at Warwick Field House. The game was played on Sunday, January 8th, with a final score of 82-70.

The Seawolves trailed CCRI throughout the game but outscored them in quarters two and four with 20 and 14 points respectively. However, CCRI’s performance in the first and third quarters gave them a strong lead that the Seawolves were unable to make up. As a team, the Seawolves underperformed their average season free throw and three-point percentages but had a higher-than-average field goal percentage for the game at 40.3%.

First-year Jaylyn Bartolome (Sanford, Maine) finished with 10 points and junior captain Bailey Whitney (Norway, Maine) ended the game with nine points and 13 rebounds.

Junior captain Ashleigh Mathisen (Portland, Maine) had an exceptional game, putting up 25 of the team’s 70 points and making seven 3-point shots, tying the program record.

Chloe Rayko and Maggie Schwab were CCRI’s top scorers of the game, with 24 and 17 points respectively.

When asked about the game, Seawolves’ Head Coach Katie Stannard mentioned that despite the team dynamic changing over break, they were still able to play well against a great team. She commented that, “For our first game back as a new squad, I was very pleased with our effort.” Coach Stannard is optimistic for the future and is excited to see the team meet its full potential.

With the result of this game the Seawolves’ record changes to 10-4 overall, with their conference record remaining at 6-1.

SMCC’s next game will be against UCONN at Avery Point at the HUB on Sunday, January 15th. Tip-time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
