The Gordon College men's basketball team started the 2nd half on a 17-2 run to open up a two-point game on the way to an 82-68 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) decision versus the University of New England at Kanas Court on Tuesday night (Feb. 7).
The Fighting Scots got off to a similar lead at the tip, at 17-4, with eight from Garrett Sattazahn. But then the Nor'easters held steady for a bit (26-15) before chipping away at the spread with nine in-a-row that featured five from Jayden Thornton and four by Sam McElliott. A Thornton triple at the 2:05 mark had it down to one (30-29), and things settled at 32-30 after 20 minutes.
Sattazahn tossed in a quick five to lead Gordon into the final period, and it was soon 49-32 with 15:31 to go. UNE did score the next nine to stay within striking distance, and a three-point play by Zach Boulay with 2:41 on the board reduced the margin back down to eight (70-62), but the deficit was too large to overcome.
Pacing the hosts was Sattazahn with 23 points. The Scots (9-13, 5-10 CCC) added 15 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists out of Zachary Bennett, with another 14 points and nine caroms from Caleb Scott. Zach Quanico registered 11 points, and Rob Shelansky posted a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. Gordon negated having nearly twice as many turnovers (17-9) by shooting 46 percent from the field and netting 20 points from 19 offensive boards -- which were part of a 57-29 advantage on the glass.
Thornton had 14 points and five steals for the Nor'easters (2-20, 0-15), and Adrian Torres recorded 14 points, as well. Boulay tallied 12 points, and Zach Federico put up nine points with six caroms. Ryan Lin corralled a team-high seven rebounds for the visitors, who connected at a 37 percent clip fromm the floor on the evening (26-for-70).
UNE will pay a visit to Nichols College on Saturday.
