University of New England Emerson fends off UNE, 14-12

The Emerson College men's lacrosse team scored three of the final four goals of the game to earn a 14-12 victory over the University of New England in non-conference action at Blue Bolt Field on Thursday.
 
The Lions (3-1) took their largest lead of the game at 11-7 with 9:59 to play after a goal by Aedan Kiniry, but the Nor'easters responded with four goals in less than three minutes to storm back level. Andrew Lawrence started the UNE comeback with an unassisted goal, his third of the game with 9:01 left [Watch]. Jordan White connected with Colin Watt for a score just over a minute later to bring the Nor'easters within two. A turnover by Emerson gave UNE the ball back with just under seven minutes left, and Sam McGregor dodged a few defenders and scored from close range with 6:48 to play to make the score 11-10. Ben Gowell won the ensuing faceoff for the Nor'easters, and McGregor eventually found Finn McCoy for the equalizer (11-11) with 6:12 remaining.
 
However, Nicholas Fulgione put the Lions back in front with his fifth goal of the game at the 4:51 mark. He then added his sixth to make it 13-11 with 3:36 remaining. UNE was able to get one back as Shea Fogarty found the back of the net with 2:53 showing [Watch], but was unable to score again.
 
White scored the first goal of the game for the Nor'easters and they held the lead for most of the first quarter. Fulgione and Benson Offit scored 48 seconds apart in the period to give Emerson a 2-1 lead after one. The teams traded scores in the second quarter as UNE tied the game three times but was unable to grab the lead back. The Lions led 6-4 at the half.
 
Fulgione had two goals in the third quarter as Emerson pulled in front 9-6 heading into the final quarter. Ben Gowell tallied his first goal of the season for UNE in the third. He was also nearly unstoppable in faceoffs, winning 22-of-29 attempts and grabbing 14 ground balls on the day.
 
Lawrence led the Nor'easters with five points on three goals and two assists. Ryan Hazard had a pair of goals and assists. McCoy scored twice. Todd Cravedi and Colin Gleason led the UNE defense with two caused turnovers each. Evan Hazard had 11 saves in the loss.
 
Overall shots (45-38) and shots on goal (32-25) favored the Nor'easters, and Emerson goalie Malcolm McGrath made 20 stops in the victory.
