Husson University received a 16-strikeout performance out of McKenna Smith in the opener and pulled away with its bats in game two to secure wins of 3-1 and 11-2 (6 innings) against the University of New England in softball action on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 25) at Nor'easter Diamond.
The teams were separated by just two runs through the first 10 innings of the day. The Eagles improve to 8-10 on the year, while the Nor'easters slip to 2-10 overall.
Smith yielded just three hits to the hosts in GAME 1 (HU 3-1), although, for the most part, UNE's pitching from Mia Micucci and the defense did their parts to keep the Nor'easters right in it. All of Husson's runners left on base were in scoring position (5), including four stranded at third and two of those with one out. UNE also turned a double-play with Jamie DuPont turned a double-play with Abby Miner to get out of the 3rd.
After the Eagles survived a one-out triple by Becca Dumont in the bottom of the 3rd, with Smith picking up two of her strikeouts, Husson began the 4th with three consecutive hits and netted a couple of scores. Olivia McCarty started it off with her second hit, and then Kenzie Dore and Tori Exel came through with RBIs.
Miner led off the home half and got one right back (2-1), launching a towering solo shot that just cleared the left field fence inside the foul pole.
Things stayed that way until the top of the 7th, when a two-out RBI-double from Tatyanna Biamby gave some insurance and scored Kiara McLeod after her game-high third hit.
Micucci fanned three and didn't allow a walk in the circle for the Nor'easters.
GAME 2 (HU 11-2) was level at 2-2 through three frames, but three unearned runs put the Eagles ahead in the 4th. Another unearned in the 5th made it 6-2, before four hits, an error, and two walks amounted to five more in the 6th.
Among the five Husson players with two hits apiece were Dore (two RBI) and Bulla McCabe (three runs), and Biamby drove in three runs. Emily Rerick did enough to earn the victory in the circle, before Smith struck out three over the last two innings.
For the Nor'easters, Kenzie Bessette and Miner each had two hits, while Makenzy Herron scored both runs off of Elise Connor RBI-groundouts. Kara MacDonald took the pitching setback, working four frames with two strikeouts and two earned runs.
