Olivia Roy, Eloise Ring, and Annika Doeppers each claimed multiple events as the University of New England women's swimming team defeated Gordon College, 183-67, on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 14) at the Campus Center Pool.
In all, the Nor'easters were victorious in 13 of 14 events on the day, improving to 5-2 in dual meets this season.
Roy won three times for the hosts, taking the 200-individual medley (2:29.78), the 100-breaststroke (1:19.25), and the 100-individual medley (1:10.02). Two of those were tight finishes over teammates -- 0.71 ahead of Meghan Cabral in the 100 breast, and 0.50 ahead of Doeppers in the 100 IM.
Ring's two triumphs in the 50-backstroke (32.93) and 100-backstroke (1:10.01) had fellow Nor'easter Taylor Gibson as the nearest competitor, by a combined 0.23 seconds (0.08 and 0.15, respectively). Doeppers topped Gina Ouellette of the Fighting Scots by 0.42 in the 100-butterfly (1:09.66), and then cruised to the wall in the 500-freestyle (5:46.45).
Cabral got a victory of her own in the 50-breaststroke (36.02), while Ari Cioffi touched first in the 50-freestyle (27.65). Cioffi was also a narrow second (-0.14) to Sophie Piette, who secured first-place points in the 50-butterfly (30.95). Elli Donovan was 0.43 faster than teammate Regina Dyer in the 100-freestyle with a leading time of 1:01.63.
UNE also bested the visitors in the 200-medley relay (2:04.58) -- with Ring, Doeppers, Roy, and Donovan -- and in the 200-freestyle relay (1:51.14) -- with Cioffi, Donovan, Ring, and Dyer.
The closest of the eight races decided by less than one second was won by Katherine Maloney of Gordon, posting a 2:11.90 in the 200-freestyle to clip Donovan by 0.07 ticks.
The Nor'easters get a couple weeks off before hosting the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth on January 28.
